What’s the Verdict on Books Turned to Movies?

Book lovers will tell you that the movie is never as good as the book. Creative liberties will always be taken by producers in order make the story more appealing to the masses. Many people who watch these movies have not even read the book and may not even be aware that there is a book version. Unfortunately there is not enough time in a movie to play out every detail of the book. Here is our verdict on some of the most popular books turned to movies in the last year.

Silver Linings Playbook

silver linings playbookSilver Linings Playbook follows the story of two people who meet by chance. One character walked in on his wife cheating on him which led to a psychotic break and court-mandated therapy. The other character’s husband passed away, unexpectedly, and she took up a wreckless lifestyle to cope with her grief. Together, the two of them mend each other and find ways to look for the silver linings in the events of their lives. The movie did the book justice and even casted popular stars Bradley Cooper and Jennifer Lawrence in the lead roles.

Beautiful Creatures

Beautiful Creatures is a story of a small southern town filled with casters, incubus’ and sirens. These mythical characters are mostly teenagers struggling with the answers to their own lives and love as well as the future. The mortal characters are tied up in a battle between the good and bad of the caster world. The book series by Kami Garcia and Margaret Stohl consists of four books plus another series that follows along some of the characters from the original books. The movie was more than awful. Characters from the book were blended into one making it impossible for a sequel. Then there was the makeup and character casting. The lead character – Lena – is portrayed in the novels as being breathtakingly beautiful to Ethan but in the movie she was made up to be very ordinary.  She could have used a touch more glamour from the make up department. These are common mistakes we see when books are turned into a screen.

The Mortal Instruments

The Mortal Instruments is a narrative series that chronicles a world that exists within our own where there are shadowhunters, demons, vampires and werewolves. Certainly this genre is nothing new but the take on the old lore is something that people have fallen in love with. The six-book-series written by Cassandra Clare is expected to be the next Harry Potter of film. The movie, although taking some liberties, followed the store in the book closely and even included some of the witty quotes and phrases that readers loved. This particular movie definitely deserves a gold star.

the mortal instrumentsThe Giver

Winner of the John Newberry Medal, The Giver is a story of a perfect world where people are treated as equals, all disease has been cured and society has a handle on itself. Individuals in a community do not know of the past – that burden only belongs to “the giver”. When the memories of the past are passed down to the next giver, we witness the downside of true utopia. This novel was published back in 1993 and is being resurrected in movie form in August 2014. It follows the popular trend of dystopian novels such as The Hunger Games Trilogy and the Divergent Series. We will wait to see how poorly or well this movie is made.
